Armed Forces Flag Day is marked in India every year on December 7 to honour martyrs and the men in uniform who serve India. Citizens are urged to make voluntary contributions towards the Armed Forces Flag Day Fund for the welfare of personnel and ex-servicemen, their family members and also to rehabilitate those injured in wars.
PM Modi also expresses gratitude to Armed Forces on Flag Day.
In a tweet, the Prime Minister said, “Armed Forces Flag Day is a day to express gratitude to our armed forces and their families. India is proud of their heroic service and selfless sacrifice. Do contribute towards the welfare of our forces. This gesture will help so many of our brave personnel and their families.”
On Armed Forces Flag Day, all three branches of the Indian armed forces – the Indian Army, the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Indian Navy – arrange a variety of shows, carnivals, dramas and other entertainment programmes to showcase to the general public the efforts of their personnel to ensure national security.
The Armed Forces Flag Day is a time for Indians to express their gratitude and appreciation to the military personnel of India and to acknowledge those who died in service to the country. The Armed Forces Flag Day is mainly observed to serve three basic purposes:
• Rehabilitation of battle casualties
• Welfare of serving personnel and their families
• Resettlement and welfare of ex-servicemen and their families
The decision of celebrating Armed Forces Flag Day was taken on August 28, 1949. The day is dedicated towards the collection of funds from people of India for the welfare of the Indian Armed Forces personnel, which now has become a tradition to commemorate this day as an honour to the soldiers, sailors and airmen of India.
